23rd November 2023 14:00-16:00 (UTC+1) ONLINE
Join us for an exciting online seminar with Julie de Dardel. Read more about Julie’s previous work (in French) here and here.
Here, Julie will share ideas from the research project (2023-2028) “Prison Degrowth: A Geo-Ethnographic Study of Prison Reduction and Non-Penal Alternatives,” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Its primary objective is to identify and comprehend sustainable alternatives to the predominant use of prisons as a central component of criminal justice. The research is centered on the global diffusion of prison reduction policies and non-punitive alternatives, contributing to an understanding of how these innovative models drive prison degrowth within diverse cultural and political contexts.
Learn more about the project here.
Since the project just began in September 2023, as well as learning something about the project goals and approaches, this seminar offers an opportunity to share ideas and offer input on conceptual, methodological, and strategic aspects. Julie would like to engage in discussions on the following issues:
1. Theoretical: Exploring the potentialities and limitations of the heuristic concept of “prison degrowth.”
2. Methodological: Identifying innovative methods and approaches that can enhance the policy and social impact of scientific knowledge related to prisons and carceral spaces.
3. Political/Strategic: Debating the level of detachment or engagement researchers should have when addressing urgent global issues. This includes considerations of normativity and potential alliances and collaborations with activists and policymakers.
